Lahd Gallery
London, UK
14/4/2011 – 25/5/2011
[align=left]Lahd Gallery is proud to present Rediscovering Sudan, a group exhibition of Sudanese artists whose art reflects the complexity of contemporary Sudanese society. The richness of contemporary Sudanese art is evident in its diversity and this entire Sudanese heritage, past and present, forms the base on which contemporary art is developed. It is this unique characteristic that makes Sudanese art stand out from the different African art schools.
The exhibition will feature a selection of creative works by Islam Zian Alabdeen, Iman Shaggag, Sana Elbashir and Abdelwahab Nour. Although their works are very different, they all have a strong sense of colour, boldness and narrative strength. Islam Zian Alabdeen’s works start with an introduction into the fragmentation of life into separate moments and show how these define the spirit of humanity. His bold lines and shadow techniques contain the energy of traditional landscape paintings, giving his art a subtle and timeless quality. US based Sudanese artist Iman Shaggag will also be showing her new works. Her works tell a very different story, providing powerful insights into the human condition specifically highlighting the needs of societies throughout the African continent. Her works are evocative of the multi-dimensional nature of her own country. Sana Elbashir attributes her unique style to her exposure to the multi faceted culture she grew up in. Building each piece layer by layer, the audience is invited to a spectacle of motifs as evident in her creative works. Finally the works of Adbelwahab Nour’s colours are vibrant and he uses a variety of interesting layers and textures to create dynamic paintings to capture the beauty of both the African woman and the dreamy African landscape.
Contemporary Sudanese art is inherently complex and draws its plurality from many traditions and visual styles. The art movement is highly experimental, offering an enormous scope for artists to express themselves. Rediscovering Sudan promises to be an exciting showcase and exploration of Sudan’s rich artistic and cultural legacies and will provide an insight into the diversity of this genre of art as well as allowing the viewer the pleasure of admiring the beauty of contemporary Sudanese art.

.Born in Khartoum, Sudan, Islam Zian Alabdeen studied Applied Arts at the University of Sudan. He spent the years following study exhibiting extensively in his native country and Europe, and developing workshops for adults and children.
A contemporary painter, Islam produces colourful romantic abstracts in oil on canvas. Filled with depth and detail, his works are all inspired by the awesomeness of nature. Islam’s works immediately capture the eye and the mind. His works are living snapshots of humanism in which human beings, whether men, women or animals, meet, cross paths, watch or simply see each other in their natural environment, surrounded by all kinds of everyday objects : table, glass, vase, dish, bicycle. Moments of day-to-day life, freeze-frame are anything but trivial in this apparent simplicity, but on the contrary, a daily homage to mankind. Women are omnipresent in Islam’s work, ambassadors draped in diaphanous clothes, discreet and modest, yet their presence is fully recognised and essential. Although his characters’ expressions are not void of nostalgia, they often carry themselves proudly, the quintessence of simplicity and grandeur. This is how Islam transcends his ever-present maternal and ancestral culture - that of Nubia –and his viewpoint can very often be considered universal.
Islam has exhibited nationally and internationally, with recent exhibitions in Paris, Lyon and Macao. He currently resides in Paris

.Abdelwahab Nour was born in Sudan where he was fascinated by its nature since his early childhood. He started drawing and painting while he was in secondary school and went on to obtain a BA degree from the College of Fine and Applied Arts in Khartoum.
The art of Abdelwahab is a direct result of his real life experiences in the UNICEF, which he joined after his graduation. There, he worked as an illustrator and graphic designer and he created educational materials exclusively for the villagers and nomads in South Kurdufan. The long field trips that he went on allowed him to see the suffering of the people there and the grief and sorrow as a result of the long tribal war in Sudan. He tried to reflect these emotions in his paintings and it has become the main inspiration in all his art works. In some of his paintings, he tries to show weakness and frailty in his subject’s bodies, and in the others, he portrays an African dream-like effect.
As a professional artist for over fifteen years, Abdelwahab has had twelve solo exhibitions in different countries and has participated in over fifty group exhibitions

Sana Elbashir’s bold and meditative works force us to momentarily stop and slow down; they ask for a different pace. Over the last ten years, her preoccupation has been to look at the state of women suffering in Sudan, something which has been overlooked by many. She considers herself lucky that she can paint some of her secrets to remind herself of some of her suffering. She laments that there are a lot of women with similar experiences who dare not even whisper.
Sana uses the woman’s body to express her artistic ideas and reflect on women issues in conservative societies like Sudan, which give men far more rights at the same time depriving women of their basic rights. This body of work consists of a number of paintings whose core ideas behind them are issues of circumcision, marriage and child birth. While Sana acknowledges that she cannot change the reality of the world, she can nevertheless still try to show her experiences through her art.
Sana dedicates this body of work to all the women in Sudan. She has exhibited nationally and throughout Africa and the Middle East. She currently resides in Freising, Germany.

Iman Shaggag describes freedom as the ultimate goal in art. As a woman growing up in Sudan, it was very hard for her to feel ‘free’ of all imposed obligations towards tradition, religion and society. She started painting to explore ideas and express thoughts and impulses on issues affecting women. In her opinion, producing art in all its forms is about being "absolutely free". By being an artist, she hopes to achieve that feeling of 'true freedom'.
Iman’s work in general reflects the states of the struggle, agony, suffering and hopes of Sudanese women. She is deeply interested in ancient Sudanese history, conceptually and aesthetically. In the Merotic era, queens were powerful rulers. This gives her hope and, at the same time, makes her sad when thinking about the turmoil and conflict facing Sudan now, the systemic suppression of women, as if we are going backwards! This body of work is questioning and addresses cultural bias, stereo-typing and racism. She used a photograph of herself, printing out a number of copies of the same photo, she was able to alter her features & dress, using etching ink, tempera, acrylics and graphite, to achieve her idea. By starting from one point which is her own face, it was as fair as an empty canvas, to try and imagine her life if those were her features. It proves that no matter how we look or where we come from we all share a common humanity.
Iman is the founder of Sudan Artists Gallery, an online gallery with a mission to become a significant source for contemporary Sudanese artists, collectors, and scholars around the globe. Shaggag actively exhibits her own work both in the United States and abroad while at the same time coordinating the efforts of the Sudanese Artists Gallery. Shaggag was born to Sudanese parents in the UK, she currently lives and works in the US.
