متى جرى هذا يا نجاة، وما هي الملابسات؟
إنه لفقد عظيم حقا. لم أر عبد السلام منذ الثمانينات، ولكن أخباره كانت تردني من لندن كل فترة وأخرى
وكنت دائم التطلع للقائه مرة ثانية.
ألا رحم الله الصديق عبد السلام، والعزاء لأهله وعلى رأسهم إبنته عازة، ووالدتها التشكيلية، وفاء محمود حسين، ولكل معارفه واصدقائه
وإنا لله وإنا إليه راجعون

Abdel Salam Hassan Abdel Salam, who died in London this weekend, was a guiding light of Sudan’s human rights movement. He was one of a remarkable generation of Sudanese intellectuals, who grew up and gained a first-rate education in provincial towns (in his case, Wadi Halfa in Sudan’s far north), and who possessed a vivid curiosity about the complexities and paradoxes of their country. His first job was in the customs office, and one of the many oddities of Sudanese life which he explained was the convergence between poetry and customs officials – both vocations drew disproportionately from the Halfawiin. Abdel Salam remained a poet, but studied law.
Abdel Salam was a devout secularist. Among his role models was Farag Foda, and Abdel Salam brought the same quality of straight-thinking intellectual courage to his life and work. HHe was an unflinching advocate for human rights with a keen sense of the social and political context for making those rights real. He studied Islam deeply and mocked both the excesses of Islamist zealots, and those who were intimidated by them. Analyzing Sudanese jihadism for a chapter we co-wrote on the topic, he turned to the infamous el Obeid fatwa of 1992 and immediately saw that it was, as he said “the rantings of some second-rate provincial ulema.”
I first met Abdel Salam in London in 1990, when he was Chairman of the Sudan Human Rights Organization, re-founded in exile, which was briefly hosted at Africa Watch. He was a formidable intellectual presence. He had the ability to pick out a neglected human rights issue – for example he was keenly attentive to the plight of the Sudanese Copts. We worked closely together for the following fourteen years, notably on the project “human rights in the transition in Sudan.” As early as 1997, Abdel Salam recognized that the Sudanese civil war would surely come to an end, and the human rights community would then face the challenge of ensuring that the promise of the transitional period – peace, democracy and human rights – was not missed. He chaired the committee that organized the first 1999 Kampala conference. Characteristically, he chose to present a paper in that conference on race relations. Many of the southerners present, who did not know Abdel Salam personally, were puzzled, to say the least, when a conspicuously pale-skinned northerner took the podium to speak on this issue, but were won over by his frankness and acuity. He and I co-edited the volume of papers from the conference. For much of the process I served as his ghost writer, intellectually in his debt, and wishing only that he were better able to translate his analyses into the written word.
Abdel Salam coined the term al mashru’ al medani – “the civil project” – as a riposte to the Islamists’ al mashru’ al hadhari or “civilization project.” Following on from the two Kampala conferences (1999 and 2001), this remains the vision for the civil society coalition that Justice Africa pulled together.
Abdel Salam was unfailingly disorganized, but utterly without pretension or ego, and always witty. Once, turning up three hours late for an appointment, the frustrated administrator at African Rights scolded him, ‘do you call this 12 o’clock?’ With a self-deprecating smile Abdel Salam responded, ‘somewhere in the world it is 12 o’clock…’ He longed to return to Sudan, and his work with the Redress Trust from 2007 onwards allowed him to visit Khartoum again, and plan for resuming his vocation at home.
Tragically and shockingly, Abdel Salam was murdered at his small flat in Lewisham, south London, on Saturday. The circumstances of his untimely death are not clear. He was divorced and leaves an adult daughter[/size]

Gentle giant felled in exile
With the murder of Abdel Salam Hassan Abdel Salam on 13 March, Sudan has lost one of its most tenacious human rights advocates and incisive critics of political Islam. The Sudanese community in Britain has lost a loved and respected figure – author, activist, lawyer and, most unusually for a Sudanese, resolute vegetarian (exception made for fish).
The tragic irony of Abdel Salam’s brutal killing, aged only 56, in his small ground-floor flat in the London borough of Lewisham, was
highlighted by Detective Chief Inspector Damian Allain, the police officer now leading a murder inquiry. Abdel Salam, he said, had devoted much of his life to combating the abuses of the human rights of others. A neighbour called him a “gentle giant”, someone who “would always say hello”.
In a tense pre-election period, Abdel Salam’s death sent shock waves through the Sudanese expatriate community. A number of Sudanese had received anonymous text messages in the preceding days claiming, falsely, that a leading challenger to President Omar al-Bashir, Yasir Arman, had been killed. Police say they “retain an open mind” about the motive for the murder, which acquaintances of Abdel Salam are linking to bullying and harassment by local youths – both on the street and in a number of burglaries and attempted burglaries.
A devout secularist, Abdel Salam left Sudan after the National Islamic Front (NIF) seized power in June 1989. He was a member of the Baath party in Sudan until 1978 and after that joined the Sudanese Communist Party. In exile, he focused on rights issues and on exposing, with rigorous scholarship, the hypocrisy of political Islam. (One of his role models was Farag Foda, the Egyptian thinker, columnist and human rights activist who was murdered in June 1992 by two members of al-Gama’a al-Islamiyya.) It was Abdel Salam’s merciless dissection of the intellectual bankruptcy of political Islam, more than his human rights work, that riled the NIF.
In London in 1990, Abdel Salam chaired the Sudan Human Rights Organisation, re-organised in exile. He later worked with Justice Africa, analysing Sudanese jihadism for a chapter co-authored with Alex de Waal in Islamism and its Enemies in the Horn of Africa. It was he who coined the now-familiar term al-mashru’ al-medani (the civil project) in response to the Islamists’ al-mashru’ al-hadhari (the civilisation project) that focused on the elevation of Arab values and culture (including, in practice, through violence).
Deadlines, organisation and timing were not Abdel Salam’s strong points. But he charmed his way out of trouble, on one occasion telling a colleague who chided him for arriving four hours later for a midday meeting: “But somewhere in the world it is 12 o’clock!”
“Abdel Salam was always a delight to see because he always had an angle on everything that was a little deeper than anyone else yet at the same time was very human,” de Waal said. “Just to sit down with him was to be exposed to a machine of insights.”
Although divorced, Abdel Salam remained close to his former wife, Wafa Mahmoud Hussein, with whom he had a daughter, Azza. He longed to return to live in a democratic Sudan and visited the country last year as legal advisor to the Redress Trust, with whom he began working in 2007. Most recently he was acting as advisor for a law-reform project aimed at reforming Sudan’s criminal justice system. Regretting the death of a “beloved colleague and friend”, Redress paid tribute not only to Abdel Salam’s leading role in the struggle for human rights and justice in Sudan over the last three decades, but also to “the conviviality with which he enriched our daily lives.”

كيف تكتب نعياً... نموذجاً (عبدالسلام)
رائب الدنيا لا تنفد.. وعجائبها لا تنتهي.. وحبكاتها الدرامية التي يصيغ القدر فصولها تظل أبلغ من أي كاتب.. لعل صدق من قال أن الطبيعة أفضل من الفن، وأن تعبيرها أنجع من تقييد المبدع.
وأخبار الموتى تأتي في كل يوم بطرق مختلفة ومتعددة، فمن نشرات الأخبار التي تحصي بلا رحمة مئات القتلى وآلاف الجرحى، الى نشرة أمدرمان التي تداهمنا بنمطيتها المبتدئة بـ(أيها السادة)، أو عبر تلفونات منتصف الليل التي تراها فيلج القلب ويردد اللسان "إن شاء الله خير". كلها يكتنفها التبيان المبهم منضويا بخفة في سبحات الجهل العقلي بالحدث. ولكن للأقدار أياد أخرى.. كصديق يودعك بحرارة وما هي الا هنيهة فيأتيك خبر رحيله (المفجع؟!).. لا.. الفجيعة لغة.. واللغة لا تعبّر عن المرء.. فهي من مخلوقاته وهو أكبر منها.. نحن أكبر من الفجيعة ذاتها، ونحن أكبر من الموت، ولا أدري فيما يخصني أي تعريف لغوي قد يشرح خلجات نفسي أو يبين عن مقدار إحساسي وشعوري!
من إبداعات الأقدار أنها تتفنن في محاولاتها المستمرة لإصابتنا بما نسميه اصطلاحا (فجيعة!).. وتحاول جاهدة –وهي لا تحتاج معنا لذلك- لإدخال حالة الذهول في رتابة حياتنا، وخلق الدهشة وفغر الأفواه.
ومن المدهشات أن عبد السلام قد رحل!! وليس في رحيل إنسان من دهشة.. ولو عرفت بموت عبدالسلام كما في نشرة (أيها السادة) وانا أتجرع شاي الصباح لبكيت وانتهيت. ولو عرفت بموته وانا أجلس للتلفاز متهيئا للمعرفة عن طريق البي بي سي لبكيت وأنتهيت. ولكن محاولة الأقدار لتجاوز الفجيعة اللغوية مستمرة.. وعبدالسلام في موته المأساوي يقبع أمامي في كل يوم بالمنابر العامة وأنا تائه الذهن اقرأ الأخبار وعبدالسلام مجرد رقم مثله مثل (مئات الجرحة) لا أعرفهم وإن كانت تقرصني لسعة الحزن عليهم.
والباقر (الحزين) بمعرفته يقول بعد أيام ثلاث من ذهاب عبدالسلام (الغاطس) في الدماء و(السابح) في الغربة نريد أن نكتب نعياً (لصديقنا) عبدالسلام..
للأقدار ألف طريقة وطريقة.. ومنها أن تجهل وتجهل وتجهل حتى تكتب عند الله جاهلا.. قلت سرا دعك في حزنك على من أسميته (صديقنا) وتصديت جهرا لكي أكتب نعياً.. من المتوفي؟! عبدالسلام!!
له الرحمة والهم آله وذويه الصبر وحسن العزاء (هكذا) تكتمل المأساة كأبرع ما تكون، وهكذا يبقى إسخليوس مجرد تلميذ (بليد) في مدرسة الأقدار (الأولية) وهكذا يخطو المرء في جثة أخيه ويصالح اللغة على حساب فجورها الخصيم مع ابن أمه.
من المتوفي؟ عبدالسلام؟! حسناً لأكن علميا وأعرف كيف توفي وأين هذا العبد للسلام.. سأذهب للمنابر عسى أن تفيدني معلومة ما في الكشف عن عبدالسلام (المجهول).. ناشط في مجال حقوق الإنسان! جميل .. رقم من ضمن (السادة). مات مقتولاً..حزين ومأساوي.. لكنه لا زال رقما في البي بي سي.
في لندن....
في لندن؟!! وبإرتياب طفيف يدفعه الجهل البشري الى الأعماق مكذبا الريبة ودامغا إياها بالجهل أهز رأسي نافيا.. لا ليس هو ولا يمكن أن يكون.. ولتكتمل المهزلة فإن الإسم يرد في المفتتح (عبدالسلام حسن....) فقط حسن... ولكن لا يظنن ظنان أن عبدالسلام الجد اذا ظهر بين طرفي حسن لكان إختلف الأمر.. لا .. فالأقدار لها الف طريقة وطريقة.. وحسن (فقط) يقف بيني وبين معرفة ستؤرق راحتي، وتعصف بيومي هذا..
أالجهل هو؟
وهناك خيط للعزاء آخر ثبتته الإدارة.. ولم اقرأ فيه كثيرا ومررت على المداخلات بسرعة.. وأنزل وأنزل وأنزل وفجأة تخبطني طوبة على وجهي.. وتسمرت يدي على الماوس.. لماذا تقبع صورة عبدالسلام على المنبر.. عبدالسلام بشحمه ولحمه وجثته الممتلئة وسمته العملاق.. عبدالسلام بعرجته وعصاته وضحكته وقفشاته وأفكاره وجنوحه وخياله.. عبدالسلام بلطفه وظرفه وفنه وفكره ونضاله.. لماذا يقبع عبدالسلام على الشاشة.. عبدالسلام؟!! أهذا أنت؟!!
مدحت يا صديقي تعال وأنظر.. هذا عبدالسلام
(صديقنا).. صديقنا!!! صديقنا ااااااه.. هكذا..... هذا ما عناه العفيف بـ(صديقنا)

ومن المدهشات أن عبد السلام قد رحل!! وليس في رحيل إنسان من دهشة.. ولو عرفت بموت عبدالسلام كما في نشرة (أيها السادة) وانا أتجرع شاي الصباح لبكيت وانتهيت. ولو عرفت بموته وانا أجلس للتلفاز متهيئا للمعرفة عن طريق البي بي سي لبكيت وأنتهيت. ولكن محاولة الأقدار لتجاوز الفجيعة اللغوية مستمرة.. وعبدالسلام في موته المأساوي يقبع أمامي في كل يوم بالمنابر العامة وأنا تائه الذهن اقرأ الأخبار وعبدالسلام مجرد رقم مثله مثل (مئات الجرحة) لا أعرفهم وإن كانت تقرصني لسعة الحزن عليهم.
والباقر (الحزين) بمعرفته يقول بعد أيام ثلاث من ذهاب عبدالسلام (الغاطس) في الدماء و(السابح) في الغربة نريد أن نكتب نعياً (لصديقنا) عبدالسلام..
للأقدار ألف طريقة وطريقة.. ومنها أن تجهل وتجهل وتجهل حتى تكتب عند الله جاهلا.. قلت سرا دعك في حزنك على من أسميته (صديقنا) وتصديت جهرا لكي أكتب نعياً.. من المتوفي؟! عبدالسلام!!
له الرحمة والهم آله وذويه الصبر وحسن العزاء (هكذا) تكتمل المأساة كأبرع ما تكون، وهكذا يبقى إسخليوس مجرد تلميذ (بليد) في مدرسة الأقدار (الأولية) وهكذا يخطو المرء في جثة أخيه ويصالح اللغة على حساب فجورها الخصيم مع ابن أمه.
من المتوفي؟ عبدالسلام؟! حسناً لأكن علميا وأعرف كيف توفي وأين هذا العبد للسلام.. سأذهب للمنابر عسى أن تفيدني معلومة ما في الكشف عن عبدالسلام (المجهول).. ناشط في مجال حقوق الإنسان! جميل .. رقم من ضمن (السادة). مات مقتولاً..حزين ومأساوي.. لكنه لا زال رقما في البي بي سي.
في لندن....
في لندن؟!! وبإرتياب طفيف يدفعه الجهل البشري الى الأعماق مكذبا الريبة ودامغا إياها بالجهل أهز رأسي نافيا.. لا ليس هو ولا يمكن أن يكون.. ولتكتمل المهزلة فإن الإسم يرد في المفتتح (عبدالسلام حسن....) فقط حسن... ولكن لا يظنن ظنان أن عبدالسلام الجد اذا ظهر بين طرفي حسن لكان إختلف الأمر.. لا .. فالأقدار لها الف طريقة وطريقة.. وحسن (فقط) يقف بيني وبين معرفة ستؤرق راحتي، وتعصف بيومي هذا..
أالجهل هو؟
وهناك خيط للعزاء آخر ثبتته الإدارة.. ولم اقرأ فيه كثيرا ومررت على المداخلات بسرعة.. وأنزل وأنزل وأنزل وفجأة تخبطني طوبة على وجهي.. وتسمرت يدي على الماوس.. لماذا تقبع صورة عبدالسلام على المنبر.. عبدالسلام بشحمه ولحمه وجثته الممتلئة وسمته العملاق.. عبدالسلام بعرجته وعصاته وضحكته وقفشاته وأفكاره وجنوحه وخياله.. عبدالسلام بلطفه وظرفه وفنه وفكره ونضاله.. لماذا يقبع عبدالسلام على الشاشة.. عبدالسلام؟!! أهذا أنت؟!!
مدحت يا صديقي تعال وأنظر.. هذا عبدالسلام
(صديقنا).. صديقنا!!! صديقنا ااااااه.. هكذا..... هذا ما عناه العفيف بـ(صديقنا)

للأقدار ألف طريقة وطريقة لتكذِّب أبا تمام في قوله:
على أنها الأيام قد صرن كلها ... عجائب حتى ليس فيها عجائب
بل من عجائب الأيام أنها تعج بالعجائب ومع هذا فإنا نعجب في كل يوم
